Dave Ellis Memorial Lecture
In 2007 FLAC organised a lecture in memory of the late community law activist Dave Ellis, who had died earlier that year, on the topic of 'access to justice'. Since then the lecture has become an annual event, held in December and on the general topic of access to justice. FLAC has been able to host a range of respected speakers over the years - a list is given on the right.
Dave Ellis was a community activist who dedicated his career to working with community groups in areas including welfare rights, legal aid, legal education and legal entitlements generally. Dave was Community Law Officer at Coolock Community Law Centre (now Community Law & Mediation ) for more than 20 years. He subsequently established Community Legal Resource to provide information, training and support for the not-for-profit and community sector.
In 2023, the lecture was given by Former FLAC Chair and veteran campaigner for constitutional reform Peter Ward SC. In his lecture – titled “Our Unfinished Republic” – Mr Ward reflected on his over 40 years of involvement with FLAC and looked to the future of access to justice and equality in Ireland.
